Podcasts, The Open Source Way
Came across this in the morning reading, for those of you interested in grabbing podcasts without going the iTunes way (which I was trying out myself at the weekend). The article points to an open source option for scheduling the download of podcasts once you’ve got the URL you need. Called Juice, the full article is available here including a full tutorial on how to use it!
Its cross platform too, PC and Mac versions available now with a linux version in the offing… and it already comes complete with a directory of thousands of available podcasts!
The download is a nifty 6.29mb as well (windows)…

I have never used iTunes automated podcast hoovering feature - sometimes I just don’t like to automate too much. But Juice just might tickle my fancy enough to break that!

Of course now I’m feeling obligated to go and buy an iPod just for the sake of filling it up with podcast material!
Should be fun to play with, iTunes is quite bulky and not exactly the most memory friendly, if Juice runs with low resources then I’ll be pretty happy to keep it going
I *think* Juice is the new name for iPodder (Adam Curry’s software that was the first audio xml feed reader). Apple made him change the name legally so as iPodder was too close to their product. It’s been around since the start.
Look at http://www.songbirdnest.com for Song Bird, an open source version of iTunes.

didn’t know that about Juice, didn’t read too much into it I guess! As for songbird, I’m not too gone on it. Several attempts to use the early releases of it resulted in constant crashing so I figure I’d wait a while before using it, see how it settles down. One of those “first impressions last” type things….
I’m glad to see you’re recommending Juice. I’ve been on Juice’s team since when it was known as iPodder. Did some work with localization and the documentation / user guide. It gives users a lot of freedom on how to handle their podcast getting adventures, it is open source, a pioneer, and growing stronger every day. There’s a team of very talented individuals working on the project, so I’m sure it’ll just keep getting better and Juicier
