Make Money Feeding iPods

This one straight out of Dane Carlon’s blog tells of an entrepreneuring idea helping people put music on their iPods. You’ve heard all about them, you want one, haven’t a clue how to use it or get your hundreds of cd’s onto the damn thing. Well, now for $1.75 a cd for the first 50 with Hungrypod you can have your entire cd collection picked up and transferred onto an iPod and delivered right back to you….

this has been tried in Ireland, but beaten down in an instant by IRMA - company was based in the digital hub I think??

What a nice way to make money
All they do is rip people’s CD collection and load it in their iPods? I don’t see anything illegal there - if you own the CD, you have the right to listen in your iPod as well.
And nothing is done online, it’s an offline business, unless they want to buy “recommended” songs, which are also payed for.
Why would they have problems with any copyright issue?
Maybe because it is going on the other persons pc.. so they have it illegally.. ??
In a former life as a co-founder of hookablemedia.com, I spent some time looking at this. A company called Moving Media (then based in Digital Hub) with a sevice called Rip Factory was offering to rip CD’s to a onto . My understanding is that under pressure from IRMA, the guys had to call it a day (back in late 2004?) - though they still appear to offer the software for use in countries with less stringent copyright/music rights lobbying.
On a more recent note, Digital Rights Ireland with an article in Irish Times (http://www.ireland.com/newspaper/pricewatch/2006/0710/3952024137FTMONDIGITAL.html,
dated 10th July) categorically isolates the law in the Republic of Ireland on this matter - my paraphrasing - “that making private copies of CD’s for use on an iPod is illegal “.
