Stopping (Or helping to curb) Blog Content Theft

Posted on September 30, 2006 in Security

If you’re a Wordpress user, you might be interested in this….

Digital Fingerprints is the launch of a new plugin for Wordpress aimed at tracking blog content theft. It won’t prevent people from copying and pasting material directly from your blog, but it will surely annoy those who republish others RSS feeds into their own blog for the sake of content.

The plugin injects a “digital fingerprint” manually into your posts which is seen only in your feeds, not in the post itself.

Maxpower.ca has the full post and all the details.

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed to keep up to date with kenmc.com. Maybe some of my earlier posts will interest you too! Thanks for visiting kenmc.com!

I know you are not suggesting this, but let me just say that content theft isn’t an excuse to intentionally disable your RSS feed. I love RSS.. so long as people provide full feeds ( see http://www.fullfeeds.com )

Ah god no, without RSS I don’t think we’d have such a strong interest in blogging at all and I’m a firm believer in it (and in delivering full RSS feeds, through this blog, and my others). :)

And this WordPress Plugin won’t “stop” content theft. It helps you track if your blog has been ripped off. It’s a great step in the right direction, though the weight and responsibility is still on US and not on THEM. I’ve long been a fan of putting all the responsibility on the user and abuser of content, not the author. What a world this would be, huh? ;-)
