D-Day June 26: Driving Test

Friday May 9, 2008

It wasn’t all that long ago that I applied for my driving test (could have been Easter) but yesterday I finally received notice of the date - June 26th, smack bang in the middle of Trainspotting no less.

The test too has been outsourced to SGS who will be in Kilkenny on the day.

Has anyone had any experience with testing instructors from SGS or notice anything different in tests outsourced to independent testers or instructors?

I must say though, I’m quite looking forward to it. Between work, music, theatre and the increasing frequency of drives to and from Sligo, I’m spending more and more time on the road. While I’ve enjoyed almost two years on a provisional license, turning 25 at the end of this month and having my insurance up for renewal in August places the test at the right time, financially anyway.

All I need to do now is pass the thing…

Best of luck with it Ken. Don’t forget to take some lessons before you take the test.

    Lessons?

What’s this ‘lessons’ you speak of? :) Oh but of course. It’s been quite a while since I’ve had a driving lesson so I’ll be booking a string of them before the day.

The SGS staff seem to be very polite and professional compared to some of the others I encountered

Best of luck with the test Ken.

I was supposed to sit my test last month but the tester to refuse to carry out the test on the day due to the fact that my airbag light was on…. Needless to say I was fairly annoyed but thems the breaks!

I did and passed my test with the SGS company. Generally speaking they are known to be much more easy going than the Government testers. It’s apparently due to the shorter time they’ve been testing compared to the Government guys. I do have some advice that might prove beneficial to you though. They’re huge on image. Suit and tie! The less likely you are to become a boy racer, the more likely they are to pass you. Play up the businessman image, so they’ll think you need your car for work. (Whether it’s true or not, it probably is in your case.) It might sound superficial but it does make a difference. They are looking to pass you unless you give them a reason not to, and the words “boy racer” is closely followed by the word failure. It may not be as important as driving well and safely, but it does count for something. Fact!

    Good luck my friend!

    Mick
